The Theme of the 2018 Youth Sailing World Championship is SUSTAINABILITY and OCEAN CONSERVATION. This Championship is the first World Sailing event to include an environmental focus in a World Championship. We are excited to use this event as a model not only for future World Sailing Regattas, but also for future Corpus Christi citywide events and throughout the Texas Youth Sailing Regatta circuit. By running a clean regatta and actively incorporating education pieces into regatta activities, we hope to instill a passion for protecting our oceans and raise awareness of the importance of sustainable practices in our daily lives.

To fulfill our mission, the Host Committee designated a "Green Team" for the championship and partnered with 11th Hour Racing, an organization that works with the sailing community and maritime industries to advance solutions and practices that protect and restore the health of our oceans.

The Green Team goals are:

  • Reach the Platinum Level of Clean Regatta, as designated by Sailors for the Sea.
  • Promote environmental awareness and ocean conservation to the youth participants in the regatta and local South Texas community by including an environmental education component in the regatta festivities.?
  • Create an environmental legacy program for the South Texas Community and for the Youth Sailing World Championships.?
  • Publish a sustainability report based on GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Standards which can be used as a benchmark for future sailing and sporting events. ?

A strong participation, collaboration and partnership between all those involved in the event - such as competitors, team leaders, coaches, volunteers and other stakeholders - will ensure that we accomplish the above goals.

We kindly ask you to follow the simple guidelines outlined below:

  1. You are required to bring your own personal reusable water bottle(s). Also, if you use powdered sports drink mixes, please bring those to refill your reusable bottles, as no single-use plastic bottles will be provided nor are allowed in the venue. We will provide you with fresh drinking water to refill your bottles. You will need to wash your own bottles, as needed.
  2. No plastic bags or other single-use plastic items, such as cutlery, drink containers or bags, are allowed at the regatta venue or hotel in event areas. Please bring only re-usable items such as shopping bags and food containers. We will provide you with reusable and non-plastic service ware for all meals.
  3. All waste must be disposed of in proper waste receptacles for recycling, composting, and landfill, which will be located around the venue. Signage will clearly show you how to separate materials into the bins provided.
  4. Please clean your boat using water only. Deck soaps contain phosphates and nitrates that can dramatically affect water quality and can harm sea life, especially in a closed harbor.
  5. Please use only reef safe sunscreens. Sunscreens with oxybenzone are highly discouraged, as they contaminate the water and are harmful to marine life. For more information please click here.

If you have any questions about the above guidelines, please contact us directly. We appreciate everyone abiding by the Clean Regatta Policies.

We look forward to wonderful sailing in Corpus Christi and spreading the message of ocean conservation to the next generation of sailors around the world.

Thank you and remember to bring your re-usable water bottle!
